 Taniec współczesny jest gatunkiem tańca wykonywanego dla publiczności, który wykorzystuje systemy i metody wywodzące się z tańca nowoczesnego i postmodernistycznego. Taniec współczesny czerpie zarówno z nowoczesnych technik tańca, jak i nowszych filozofii ruchu, które odchodzą od klasycznych technik tanecznych poprzez całkowite pominięcie ustrukturyzowanej formy i ruchu. Nazwa "taniec współczesny" opisuje całą gamę technik i styli używanych na zajęciach, warsztatach i w choreografii. Taniec współczesny rozwinął się na początku XX wieku jako reakcja na "sztywny" taniec baletowy. Pionierzy, tacy jak Isadora Duncan i Martha Graham, poszukiwali swobodnego ruchu poprzez użycie naturalnych linii ciała i energii oraz pozwolenie na większy zakres i płynność ruchów, niż konwencjonalne techniki taneczne.

~~~ Contemporary dance is a genre of concert dance that employs systems and methods found in modern dance and postmodern dance. Contemporary dance draws on modern dance techniques as well as newer philosophies of movement that depart from classical dance techniques by altogether omitting structured form and movement. The name "contemporary dance" describes a range of techniques and styles used in classes, workshops and dance choreography. Contemporary dance was developed in the early 20th century as a reaction against the rigid techniques of ballet. Pioneers such as Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham searched for ease of movement using the body's natural lines and energy, allowing a greater range and fluidity of movement than conventional dance techniques.
